Whether you are in sales, marketing, business ownership or in school, goal setting should be extremely important to you! I’m pretty positive everyone has heard about setting short term and long term goals but the question is, how many people actually do it? You might be shocked to know that it is probably less than you think. One of the most important factors that should go into your planning is goal setting and it is rarely used. I recently had a conversation with a marketing professional who offers consulting to various businesses and I asked, “Do you set goals with your clients?” To my surprise, he said no! I thought to myself how do you evaluate your success, how do you work towards something, and how can you build your business without goals of any kind? After having this conversation it made me think about the importance of this topic so I wanted to share with you a variety of important reasons why you should set goals!
“All who have accomplished great things have had a great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible.” – Orison Swett Marden
The following are a few of the key reasons why I suggest you set goals……
To Maximize Results
I’m not gonna lie so why not hit you with the most important one first? The bottom line is, successful people, set goals! When you set goals, you have the vision to work toward. You ensure that you are pushing yourself to get the best results possible, rather than waiting for things to happen. Remember if you can envision it, you can obtain it!
Creates Focus
When you have a goal, you create a focal point where your energy can be channeled to create the maximum reward. In today’s society, it’s extremely easy to get distracted and waste your energy on tasks that aren’t important to reach your goal. It’s amazing what happens when you stay focused and how much more efficient you become.
Accountability
This one directly applies to the marketing person I talked about above as well as who hired him. Wouldn’t you want to know if you’re on track or where you might be falling behind?
Motivates You
Depending on where you set your goals, they should give you something to strive for. If you set your goals high enough, they should help remind you of the things you love, to redirect your focus away from the negative obstacles you might face, and to reconnect you with your innermost desires.
Whether you are setting goals for personal use or business use they are extremely important. Set them high, set short term and long term goals. Remember, short term goals are just as important because when you obtain them they help keep you motivated and focused.
I regularly set goals for myself and my clients. It’s vital for my business and most importantly my success. What about you, do you set goals? Please share them if you do and if there are topics you would like me to share in the future, please let me know!
